ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

In Excess represents one stage of my ongoing inquiry into and observation of Philadelphia’s many fraught campaigns to manage its own waste. Archival vignettes and original media form a collage of the city’s many strategies throughout the decades – from fanciful schemes of a centralized vacuum system, to sanitation parades, to public shaming campaigns. Together they form a surprising and complex picture of the city’s vexing relationship to trash. The installation disorients and reorients us in physical space, evoking our enduring, collective relationship with this cyclical affliction of our own design. In Excess exists as a collection of findings to date – its part of my continued documentation of this ecosystem of individuals, organizations, non-human subjects and phenomenon which will be edited into a feature length film.
