Things are uncomfortable. Things have been uncomfortable for a while. The world itches in every corner, and as it twists and screams, its residents scramble over its ruins. Our moments of pain – captured, documented, meme-fied, laughed at, monumentalized, worshipped, idolized, romanticized, edited, analyzed, criticized, torn apart, sexualized, ignored, banished, destroyed, over and over again. My “Hellscapes” aim to capture the bizarre state of communal suffering we’re experiencing.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, Kay Seohyung Lee explores her discomforts — of her own body, gender identity, sexuality, religion, culture, and surroundings. Kay makes paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and VR art of hell – because she is in hell. Her works have been shown in Seoul, Gimpo, Seongnam, Gongju, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Paris. She loves baking but only when she is not depressed and is fond of anything that contains an ungodly amount of garlic.
