World Again is a new monthly improvised music series curated by Vox Member, Victor Vieira-Branco. This first event will feature Colombian Saxophonist and Clarinetist, Maria A. Valencia, Saxophonist Michael Foster, and Percussionist Toshi Makihara.

Artist Bios

MARÍA A. VALENCIA (Bogotá - Colombia)

Saxophonist and clarinetist from Bogota, Colombia, María graduated in musical studies from Universidad Javeriana and M.A in Fine and Electronics Arts from Universidad de Los Andes. Her work has been related to record production, live performing and artistic creation in groups such as Meridian Brothers, El Sexteto la Constelación de Colombia, Asdrúbal, MULA, PalancaTortuga Alada,  Mirlitorrinco, Vien-Tox, Trío Lesion, Hurakán Orkan, Curruncho & La Gran Resbalosa. She has developed her exploration as a composer and improviser, and as a performer she has performed on various stages and festivals in Colombia, Europe, Latin America and the United States, sharing the stage with renowned artists belonging to the diverse global scenes of experimental, avant-garde, contemporary, jazz, improvised and world music. Currently, in addition to her work as a performer and composer, she teaches at the Universidad del Rosario Bogotá.

MICHAEL FOSTER

Michael Foster is a NYC-based saxophonist and organizer whose work explores the overlap between improvisation and queer interrelational modes. He often performs with The New York Review of Cocksucking, The Ghost, duos with Ben Bennett, Lydia Lunch, and myriad collaborations with Sarah Hennies, Weasel Walter, Brandon Lopez, Marina Rosenfeld, and many others. 

TOSHI MAKIHARA

Toshi Makihara studied drums, percussion and improvisation with Sabu Toyozumi, a prominent percussionist in Tokyo. Since arriving in the United States in the late 1970’s he has worked with various new music ensembles as well as with numerous dance and theater companies internationally. Makihara has provided original music to Arden Theater Company, Diversions Dance Company (Wales), Pennsylvania Ballet, ZeroMoving Dance Company and Leah Stein Dance Company among others, and has worked with musicians including Steve Beresford, Peter Brotzmann, John Butcher, Nels Cline, Eugene Chadbourne, Tom Cora, Amy Denio, Thurston Moore, William Parker and John Zorn. He has also collaborated with poets, visual artists, filmmakers and performance artists widely.
